AI crash: Past surgeries aid in identifying victims

India

After the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, identifying the 270 victims became a huge challenge—most bodies were badly burned.
Dr. Hasmukh Patel, a local MLA, stepped in with a smart approach: using things like metal surgical implants to tag bodies for later DNA matching at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

System made all the difference

Since usual markers like jewelry and hair were destroyed by fire, Dr. Patel's system made all the difference.
Thanks to his method (and experience from handling a similar disaster back in 1988), 251 victims have been identified so far and most returned to their families.
The process took an emotional toll on everyone involved, but it brought some closure during an incredibly tough time.
