Air India puts a lid on economy fares as ticket prices soar
Air India and Air India Express just capped economy fares on all non-stop domestic flights, starting December 4.
This comes after IndiGo's flight cuts sent ticket prices through the roof, and the government quickly stepped in to keep things fair for travelers.
Why did this happen?
With IndiGo slashing flights, airfares soared—for example, a one-way, one-stop SpiceJet flight from Kolkata to Mumbai on December 6 cost as much as ₹90,000.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation responded by setting temporary fare caps across affected routes to prevent opportunistic pricing until things settle down.
What does the cap actually cover?
The cap only applies to economy seats on direct domestic flights—so if you're booking multi-leg trips or mixing cabin classes via third-party sites, those aren't included yet.
Air India says it's working with platforms to keep an eye on these loopholes and is also adding more flights so people (and their bags) can get where they need to go without extra hassle.
