Assam's Cachar district enforces night curfew on Indo-Bangladesh border

India

Assam's Cachar district just rolled out a night curfew along its 32-km stretch with Bangladesh, hoping to clamp down on smuggling, illegal infiltration, and cattle theft.
From sunset to sunrise, movement is banned within one kilometer of the border under a new order issued December 2024.

Why should you care?

This isn't just about rules—it's about keeping the area safer and stopping illegal crossings.
The curfew also means no boating or fishing on the Surma river at night unless you've got special permission, and transporting essentials like rice or oil after dark is off-limits in nearby zones.
Only government employees on duty get a pass. Police and BSF will monitor compliance with these rules, with the crackdown set to last two months (and possibly longer if needed).
