At least 9 dead in Tuensang Nagaland after spurious liquor

At least nine deaths have been reported in Tuensang, Nagaland, suspected to be due to consumption of spurious liquor.
The police chief has issued a statewide red alert and urged everyone, especially in Tuensang, Mon, Mokokchung, and Longleng, to avoid alcohol for now.
An investigation is ongoing to figure out what caused the tragedy.

This incident has put the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act back in the spotlight.
Although meant to curb alcohol problems since 1990, it's been criticized for fueling illegal liquor markets and not really keeping people safe.
There are now growing calls to rethink the law and maybe switch to a regulated system that could better protect public health and reduce underground trade.
