Bareilly bride calls off wedding over dowry demand
In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a bride named Jyoti called off her wedding at the last minute after the groom's family allegedly demanded a Brezza car and ₹20 lakh in cash.
The demand came just before the ceremony, despite months of planning and expensive gifts already given by Jyoti's family.
Asking for dowry like this is illegal under Indian law.
What happened next
Jyoti's family had spent around ₹15 lakh on the wedding, including gold jewelry and household items for the groom's side.
When things escalated, they called the police, who detained the groom and his relatives for questioning—though no formal complaint has been filed yet.
In a video that quickly went viral, Jyoti said, "I don't want to marry these dowry-greedy people." She also stated, "The one who is humiliating my father and brother in front of all the guests for dowry—how will he respect me in the future? I won't take wedding vows with such a greedy person."
Police say an investigation is ongoing.
This incident highlights how dowry demands are still a real problem in India today.
