Basanti Adivasis burn priests' effigies, accuse church leaders of conversion
India
Things got heated in Basanti, West Bengal, as members of the Adivasi Eilya Parishad burned effigies of Christian priests, accusing local church leaders of pushing Adivasis to convert with false promises.
This protest came just days after a church was vandalized, allegedly by Hindutva supporters, adding fuel to already tense community relations.
National Christian Council demands government action
The National Christian Council and other groups are calling out the government for not doing enough, especially as reports show at least 60 incidents targeting Christians in West Bengal between May and September 2026.
Herod Mullick, the founding State Secretary of Bangiya Chrisityo Pariseba, said attacks are now hitting established congregations, urging real action to protect minority rights.
