Bengaluru's December chill doesn't qualify as 'cold wave'

India

Bengaluru is feeling colder than usual this December, with nights dipping to 12-14°C—definitely chillier than the typical 16°C.
Still, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) says it's not officially a "cold wave."
For southern states, IMD only calls it a cold wave if temperatures drop to 15°C or there's a much bigger dip from normal, which hasn't happened here.

Why Bengaluru's cold doesn't count as a 'wave'

The IMD uses different rules for different regions because India's weather varies so much.
While northern areas have their own cold wave standards, southern cities like Bengaluru need even lower temps or sharper drops to meet the mark.
So yes, it feels extra chilly—but according to the experts, this is just regular winter weather for the city.
