Blistering heatwave persists in north, central India

India

Northern and central India are facing a tough heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 45°C for nearly a week now. Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar and Churu hit 46.5°C, while cities in Uttar Pradesh like Prayagraj and Kanpur aren't far behind. The IMD says these areas are seeing temperatures over five degrees hotter than usual for this time of year.

IMD to bring some relief by June 18

This extreme heat is more than just uncomfortable—it's raising big concerns about glacier melt in the Himalayas (which could mean dangerous floods), plus the risk of forest fires is going up. With barely any rain since early June, things have been especially hard for people without easy access to resources. The IMD expects monsoon rains to finally reach central and northwest India by June 18, which should bring some much-needed relief.
