China starts 60,000MW Tibet dam, India accelerates $13 billion sump
China has kicked off construction of a massive 60,000-megawatt dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, just 50km from Arunachal Pradesh.
Not wanting to fall behind, India is speeding up its own Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) nearby.
If it goes ahead, SUMP will be India's largest hydropower project ever, with an estimated price tag of $13 billion.
India prepares for downstream flood risks
The river at the heart of all this becomes the Siang river once it flows into India, a lifeline for millions in the Northeast.
Experts are worried China's dam could mess with water flow and raise flooding risks downstream.
To stay ahead, India is boosting infrastructure and disaster readiness in the region while keeping a close eye on what China does next.
SUMP is still early in planning, but hopes are high it will help manage water and keep things safer for people living along the river.
