Delhi considers cloud seeding to wash away smog, experts warn
Delhi is considering cloud seeding, a technique where chemicals are released into clouds to trigger rain, as a quick fix for its intense pollution.
China has used it thousands of times, and the hope is that some rain could wash away the smog and bring down temperatures.
But experts caution that while it might help for a bit, it could also mess with rainfall in nearby areas.
IIT Kanpur cloud seeding failed
Delhi tried cloud seeding with IIT Kanpur last year, but no rain fell.
Still, with air quality hitting worrying levels (AQI was 367 on November 5), more trials are being considered after Diwali and Chhath Puja.
Economist Michael Greenstone says cloud seeding can offer short-term relief but isn't a long-term solution: Michael Greenstone says it can work locally, but it can't replace regulations and long-term measures.
