Delhi prepares for harsh winter with cold wave action plan
Delhi has drawn up its Cold Wave Action Plan 2025-26, preparing to notify it for what could be a seriously cold winter—think temperatures dropping below 10°C in November and possibly hitting as low as 2-3°C in late December and January.
The plan brings together early weather alerts from the IMD, the expansion or repair of existing night shelters, and extra health support for people who need it most.
Plan includes mapping out hotspots to send help
Blame La Nina—this weather pattern is likely to make cold waves in northern India both harsher and more frequent this year.
That means higher risks of hypothermia, frostbite, and breathing issues.
Delhi's plan includes mapping out hotspots to send help where it's needed fast, reserving hospital beds for cold-related cases, caring for stray animals with temporary shelters, and running awareness campaigns so everyone knows how to stay safe when the temperature drops.
