Delhi: Supreme Court's new rule on old vehicles—what's changing?

India

The Supreme Court just updated its rules for vehicles in Delhi-NCR.
As of December 17, 2025, only BS4 and BS6 vehicles get a free pass from action against old diesel (over 10 years) and petrol (over 15 years) vehicles.
If you're driving a BS3 or older vehicle—even with a valid PUC—you're not off the hook.

What are these "BS" norms anyway?

Bharat Stage (BS) norms set limits on how much pollution your car can emit.
BS3 cars pollute more than BS4 ones, which have better tech to keep exhaust cleaner.

Why does this matter for Delhi?

Delhi-NCR has lakhs of older vehicles—some over two decades old—that add to the city's winter smog.
The new rule is all about cutting down emissions from these high-polluting vehicles.

What happens if you don't follow the rules?

Starting November 1, 2025, fuel stations in Delhi-NCR will stop giving petrol or diesel to banned vehicles.
By April 2026, this will apply across NCR districts.
If you ignore the ban, your vehicle could be fined or even seized under stricter pollution control plans.
