Favipiravir shows potential against Chandipura virus

Scientists at Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV) say the antiviral drug Favipiravir is showing real potential against the Chandipura virus—a bug that mostly affects children and can cause high fever and seizures.
According to Dr. Naveen Kumar from NIV, tests in mice showed lower viral loads and better survival rates after treatment.
More animal trials are up next before any human testing happens.

TL;DR

Outbreak in 2024 affected 64 children across Gujarat, Maharashtra

Chandipura virus has been a worry in India since its discovery in 1965, but a recent outbreak in 2024 hit especially hard, affecting 64 children across Gujarat and Maharashtra—the biggest spike seen in 20 years.
Since most cases are among kids under 15, finding effective treatments is urgent.
NIV is also working on a vaccine and pushing for stronger vector control, specifically targeting sand flies, to help protect children from future outbreaks.
