Goa nightclub fire: Landowner says land was secretly re-zoned
Earlier this month's deadly fire at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa, which claimed 25 lives, has sparked new controversy.
Pradeep Ghadi Amonkar, who says he owns the land, alleges that officials quietly changed the property from a salt-pan to a settlement zone without telling him.
He's been fighting for his rights against Surinder Kumar Khosla—who he claims never paid for the land and has occupied it for over two decades.
What's happening now?
The nightclub opened on land meant to be off-limits and was hit with demolition orders for illegal construction, but managed to delay them in court.
After the fire, five people were arrested in connection with the fire. The club's owners reportedly fled to Thailand and are facing deportation.
Meanwhile, multiple investigations into what went wrong are still ongoing.
