Haryana sanitation workers strike as legal hurdles block permanency
India
Haryana's sanitation workers have been on strike for over two weeks, after government talks hit a wall on August 22.
While most of their demands were sorted out in a recent meeting, the big one (making their jobs permanent) is still stuck because of legal hurdles.
Naresh Shastri demands end to contracts
With garbage piling up in markets and public spaces in many parts of Haryana, union leader Naresh Shastri says the strike will go on until workers get job security and the contract system is scrapped.
He points out that contract work means unstable paychecks and salary delays that sometimes last months.
The union now hopes to meet Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to push for a real solution.
