'Identified ailment': SC on delays in HC judgments
The Supreme Court has called out serious delays in high court judgments, saying it's an "identified ailment" that needs urgent attention.
This came up when the matter was placed before a Supreme Court bench that included Chief Justice Surya Kant, after counsel pointed out that a Jharkhand judge hadn't uploaded a written verdict two months after announcing it.
The bench directed the judge to upload the judgment within one to two weeks and provide it to the parties and counsel.
CJI Kant to address issue at upcoming judges' conference
These slowdowns aren't new—this judge also sat on another verdict for two years, and delayed big appeals until the Supreme Court stepped in.
CJI Kant plans to discuss tracking these delays at a judges' conference soon, urging judges to use vacation time to clear backlogs.
For many people—especially those from rural areas who can't easily appeal—these holdups mean real justice gets pushed further away.
