India bans Telegram until June 22 after fake NEET evidence
India
Telegram is now banned in India until June 22, 2026, after bad actors used its features to fabricate evidence of NEET question-paper leaks and spread panic among students.
The government also told Telegram to turn off its message-editing option for Indian users until June 30, just after the big NEET re-exam on June 21.
Experts seek targeted takedowns and transparency
Not everyone thinks this blanket ban is the answer.
Cybersecurity and legal experts say blocking all of Telegram could just push cheaters to other apps, while regular users lose out.
Groups like the Internet Freedom Foundation are calling the blanket ban a "band-aid solution," saying the government should make the order and reasons public and lift the platform-wide restriction and rely on targeted takedowns.
