India faces El Nino July-December, July-September southwest monsoon 53.8% shortfall
India's about to face a strong El Nino, with experts saying there's a 100% chance it'll stick around from July through December.
This means the southwest monsoon could fall short by a huge 53.8% between July and September, the biggest drop in Asia this year.
The Pacific Ocean is heating up more than usual, which is what's driving the change.
Odisha, West Bengal expect normal rains
If you're in Odisha or West Bengal, expect pretty normal rains this monsoon. parts of the North-East and adjoining Bangladesh might even see extra showers.
But places like Gujarat, western Madhya Pradesh, South-East Rajasthan and parts of the Delhi-NCR region are likely to get way less rain than usual.
Northeast monsoon likely improves October-December
Things should improve a bit with the northeast monsoon from October to December; South India may get close-to-normal rainfall, while Gujarat and Rajasthan could see average or even above-average rains just in time for early rabi crops.
