India pushes Russia to release Indians forced into military

India

India is ramping up efforts to bring home citizens who were tricked or forced into joining the Russian army—even though Moscow claims it stopped recruiting Indians back in March.
Prime Minister Modi has personally raised the issue with President Putin.
Right now, at least 44 Indians are still stuck, many having been lured on fake promises of student or work visas.

Why does it matter?

Families back home are protesting and demanding urgent action, while India's government stays in constant touch with Russia to get these people released.
Some recruits have faced threats, lost their passports, or been sent to fight in Ukraine—sometimes with tragic results.
The Ministry of External Affairs is urging everyone to avoid risky job offers abroad and is working hard for a safe return.
All this comes as India tries to balance its close ties with Russia, even introducing new tourist visas for Russians visiting India.
