India rolls out Jan Vishwas Bill to decriminalize 1,000 provisions
The Indian government just rolled out the Jan Vishwas Bill, which aims to decriminalize around 1,000 minor provisions across 79 central laws.
Instead of jail time for small mistakes, like paperwork slip-ups in health care or food safety, people will now face penalties.
The big goal? To clear up nearly 50 million pending court cases and make the legal process less stressful.
Piyush Goyal says penalties replace jail
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, the bill swaps prison sentences for penalties on minor issues but keeps strict action for serious crimes.
It also updates rules around health care violations: hospitals and clinics get penalties (not jail) for first-time mistakes but could see bigger penalties if they keep repeating them.
So far, 12 states have already jumped on board with their own versions of this law.
