India temporarily blocks Telegram after NEET (UG) 2026 leak allegations
Telegram is now temporarily blocked in India after it was linked to cheating during the NEET (UG) 2026 exam, which was canceled last month.
Investigators found that Telegram channels were used to circulate purported question papers and edit messages to fake "proof" of paper leaks.
The government hopes this block will help keep things fair as students gear up for the NEET re-test.
V Kamakoti backs Telegram ban
IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti backed the ban, pointing out that Telegram lets users edit messages and files without changing timestamps, a loophole he called "extremely dangerous" since it can spread confusion and panic.
While some might try using VPNs to access Telegram, NTA officials say this step should still limit cheating attempts and help ensure a fair exam this time around.
