Indian Railways hikes long-distance train fares from December 26

India

Heads up if you're planning a long train journey—Indian Railways is bumping up fares for long-distance routes starting December 26, 2025.
The hike is pretty small (just 1-2 paise more per kilometer), but it's expected to bring in ₹600 crore to help upgrade facilities and boost safety.
Good news: local, suburban, and short general class trips (up to 215km) aren't affected.

What's changing on popular routes?

If you're traveling between big cities like Delhi and Mumbai (1,384km), expect the general class fare to go from ₹350 to ₹364, and sleeper class from ₹585 to ₹617.
For Delhi-Patna (998km), general class jumps from ₹250 to ₹260, while sleeper goes from ₹520 to ₹544.

How much extra will you pay?

For trips over 215km, general class tickets get costlier by 1 paise/km; for sleeper and AC classes, it's an extra 2 paise/km.
That means most long journeys will be around ₹10-30 pricier than before.
If you book your ticket before December 26, though, you'll still pay the old rates.
