Inside the ₹53 crore Karnataka bank heist
Karnataka Police have cracked a huge gold heist at Canara Bank's Managuli branch in Vijayapura.
On May 25, nearly 59kg of gold jewelry worth ₹53.26 crore was stolen.
The plot was led by former branch manager Vijayakumar Miriyala, who allegedly gave duplicate keys to his accomplices before being transferred on May 9.
Details of the robbery
The gang spent months planning—studying security, disabling CCTV cameras and lighting, and even removing the video recorder.
They waited until after Miriyala's transfer to pull off the robbery and tried to throw off investigators by leaving "black magic" items at the scene.
Police tracked down two vehicles used in the crime and recovered about 10.5kg of gold so far; most of it had been melted into bars for easy transport.
A car registered in Miriyala's name led to his confession, but police believe more people are involved and are still searching for the rest of the stolen gold.
Three suspects are in custody as eight police teams continue digging into the case.
