Mumbai rain: Probe ordered after woman drowns in open drain

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a high-level investigation into the tragic death of a 45-year-old woman who fell into a drain during heavy rainfall. The incident, which took place in suburban Andheri, claimed the life of Vimal Anil Gaikwad. The BMC has assembled a three-member panel led by Deputy Commissioner Devidas Kshirsagar to conduct this inquiry and expects a report within three days.

Gaikwad's husband has lodged a complaint against the civic body following this incident. The process to register an FIR is currently underway. Gaikwad lost her life after falling into an overflowing manhole near Gate number 8 of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation building in Andheri East during a heavy downpour that paralyzed the city.

Victim pronounced dead at Cooper Hospital

Following the incident, police and fire brigade personnel rushed Gaikwad to Cooper Hospital. However, she was declared dead upon arrival. The incident has raised concerns about the safety measures in place during severe weather conditions and the accountability of civic bodies in such incidents.

Heavy downpour in Mumbai since Wednesday has o caused severe waterlogging and traffic congestion in several parts of the state capital. A landslide at the Mumbra bypass further disrupted movement in the city. The most affected regions include Veena Nagar in Mulund with 104mm, Bhandup at 120mm, Powai with 145mm, Chembur at 162mm, and Govandi, which recorded 167mm.

Schools, colleges shut in Mumbai, Pune

In response to the heavy rains, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra. As a precautionary measure, all schools and colleges in Mumbai were declared closed on Thursday. The BMC administration has requested residents to leave their homes only if necessary. Similarly, Pune District Collector Dr Suhas Diwase announced a public holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad on Thursday due to incessant rainfall predicted by IMD.
