Rana Balachauria, a kabaddi player and event organizer, was shot dead after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a tournament in Mohali on Monday, according to Hindustan Times. The incident took place around 5:30pm at a ground in Sector 82, where the match was about to begin. Eyewitnesses said that players and spectators ran for cover as gunshots rang out, even though many initially mistook the sound for firecrackers.

Balachauria suffered bullet injuries on his head and face in the attack. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident occurred shortly after Deputy Superintendent of Police HS Bal had left the venue as the chief guest. Punjabi singer Mankirat Aulakh, who was on his way to attend the tournament, reportedly turned back after hearing about the shooting.

The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Police teams reached the spot soon after and launched a search operation to trace the assailants. A case has been registered, and investigations are underway to determine the motive behind this attack. Eyewitnesses said that some men came in a Bolero vehicle and opened fire as teams were entering the ground, with some reports suggesting they approached Balachauria under the pretense of taking selfies before opening fire.
