Kanpur engineer Chandan Gupta alleges abuse during Russian detention
Chandan Gupta, an engineer from Kanpur, says he faced abuse and threats during a nearly two-day detention by Russian police.
He and his friend Ashish were arrested on September 5 for allegedly being drunk and breaking an ambulance window, allegations they deny.
Their passports and phones were taken away, and no translator was provided.
Company lawyers freed Gupta and Ashish
Gupta shared that they were detained for nearly 48 hours in custody, and Ashish was beaten after questioning their arrest.
They were finally released when lawyers arranged by Gupta's company stepped in.
While he was detained, Gupta's wife, Sneha, appealed for help on social media.
Gupta later said no embassy official contacted him and that the Indian Embassy issued information based on the Russian police version without hearing his side.
The family is now back in India, relieved but shaken, with Gupta saying he won't work abroad again after this experience.
