Karnataka investigates bike taxi apps for rule violation

India

Karnataka is looking into Uber and Rapido after claims that they're still running bike taxis, despite a High Court ban.
The companies are suspected of using "Bike Parcel" categories to quietly transport passengers, which could go against the court's order.
The original ban was put in place over safety and enforcement worries.

Bike taxi ban and its impact

Before the ban, Rapido alone handled over 5 million rides each month in Karnataka—so a lot of people lost work overnight.
With bike taxis off the roads, auto fares in Bengaluru have shot up, making daily commutes tougher for many.
While Rapido has paused its bike taxi service for now and says it's working with the government on new rules, both companies could face strict action if found guilty of breaking the law.
