Kerala Shigella outbreak sickens 146 and kills 5, mostly June
India
Kerala is dealing with a Shigella outbreak: 146 people have gotten sick and five have died, mostly in June.
Kozhikode has seen the most cases, while Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram are also affected.
Some districts like Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, and Kasaragod haven't reported any cases yet.
Officials cite contaminated water, start chlorination
Health officials say the main issue is water contamination made worse by delayed sanitation before the monsoon (thanks to Assembly elections).
Poorly chlorinated wells and water sources near toilets aren't helping either, especially with rain washing sewage into supplies.
The government's now running a chlorination drive and asking everyone to stick to safe water and good hygiene until things get better.
