Ladakh protests: Centre to resume talks with local groups
The central government is set to open talks with Ladakh's local groups after protests turned tense last month.
A planned meeting for October 6, 2024, was called off when security forces reportedly fired on demonstrators demanding more autonomy and statehood on September 24, 2024.
Now, there are calls for an independent inquiry by a retired Supreme Court judge into what happened.
What has the government promised so far?
Ladakh's Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal says the government is committed to protecting local land, resources, and culture—promising that any development will happen with community consent and stay eco-friendly.
The region's Hill Development Council will keep its powers, land laws are being updated to be more people-friendly, and there's discussion of giving Ladakh more representation in Parliament, to be considered at the time of delimitation.
