What's the story

A 17-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh's Shivcharan Inter College has created an artificial intelligence (AI) teacher robot, Sophie. The innovative project was spearheaded by Aditya Kumar, who designed the voice-only assistant using a large language model (LLM) chipset. The main aim of this project is to bring AI into everyday teaching and provide students with an interactive learning experience.

Functionality

Sophie: A versatile AI teacher

Sophie is a voice-only assistant that can answer factual questions across subjects. In a demonstration video, she answered questions about the world's tallest building and India's first President and Prime Minister. She also explained the definition of electricity and solved simple math problems like 100 + 92. The robot answers in Hindi, making it accessible for students in Hindi-speaking regions where most mainstream AI tools are still English-first.

Role

Sophie as a backup teacher

Aditya envisions Sophie as a backup teacher, not a replacement. The robot can step in for a day if the regular teacher is absent, explaining basic concepts and answering simple questions. However, it's important to note that Sophie can't write or move yet and only speaks Hindi. Aditya is working on these capabilities for the next version of his creation.

Advocacy

Aditya advocates for better facilities in schools

Along with his robot project, Aditya is also advocating for improved facilities in schools. He believes every district must have a lab where students can conduct research and build projects like Sophie.
