Ladakh records 96% more rain in June amid monsoon deficit
India
While large parts of India are dealing with a 40% monsoon rainfall deficit this June, Ladakh has surprised everyone by getting almost double its usual rain, up by 96%.
According to the India Meteorological Department, Ladakh saw 4.3mm of rain (normal is just 2.2mm), but India only got about 60% of what's typical for this time.
Western disturbances drove Ladakh rainfall
Ladakh's extra rain comes from western disturbances and not the usual southwest monsoon.
For a region that's normally dry or snowy, even small increases can trigger flash floods or landslides, experts say.
The India Meteorological Department expects monsoon rains to pick up across India after June 20 as Arabian Sea moisture moves in, but states like Maharashtra and Gujarat are still seeing major shortfalls.
