Madurai Bench orders Tamil Nadu to report on caste collection
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a report on a public interest litigation petition seeking a direction to prohibit private educational institutions and private employers in Tamil Nadu from mandatorily collecting caste or community details in application forms unless specifically required under statutory provisions.
This move comes after a petition argued that unless there is a law, forcing this information is not right and could open doors to discrimination in admissions and hiring.
Court to examine caste data collection
The court is set to look into whether private institutions can legally ask for caste details at all, with the next hearing lined up for July 21, 2026.
The case taps into bigger conversations about fairness and equal opportunity in education and jobs, especially when it comes to sensitive personal information like caste.
