Maharashtra farmer's suicide sparks outrage over moneylender harassment

India

A farmer from Maharashtra's Akola district, Gopal Wamanrao Patkhede, died by suicide after recording a video saying he was being pressured by moneylenders to repay way more than he borrowed—₹8 lakh on a ₹1 lakh loan.
His story has struck a nerve in his village.

Villagers call for change as police take action

In his video, Patkhede shared, "I am under pressure. Those people are not letting me live. That's why I am committing suicide."
After his brother reported the incident, police charged four men linked to the case.
Locals say this is just one example of how farmers are exploited by predatory lenders.
