Medha Roopam appeals to SC over Akriti Chaudhary NSA detention
Medha Roopam, the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, is appealing to the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court overturned the detention of Delhi University student Akriti Chaudhary under the National Security Act (NSA).
The High Court called her nearly five-month detention illegal and even ordered recovery of ₹5 lakh from her salary and that of other officials to compensate Delhi University student Akriti Chaudhary.
Now, Chaudhary is at the center of this new legal battle.
HC faults Roopam for NSA misuse
Chaudhary was arrested following a workers' protest in Noida last April that turned violent.
Police accused her of inciting stone-pelting and arson using "electronic and videographic evidence."
But when it reached court, judges found inconsistencies in her arrest notice and called the allegations a "concocted story."
The High Court also criticized Roopam for misusing the NSA and said Chaudhary's rights were violated, calling it an abuse of power meant to silence dissent.
