Mumbai faces 20% water cut after reservoirs fall to 10.35%
Mumbai is facing a 20% water cut for industries, commercial spaces, and sports facilities from Wednesday, June 17, 2026, thanks to reservoir levels dropping to 10.35% after a late monsoon.
The city's daily demand (4,664 million liters) is outpacing supply (4,100 million liters), so the BMC is tightening the taps until heavy rains arrive.
Mumbai suspends construction and pool connections
Water connections for construction projects and swimming pools will be suspended from Wednesday.
Big institutions such as the railways and Navy have been told to use treated wastewater instead of fresh water.
Public toilets must maximize the use of tanker, well or borewell water, which is also suggested for vehicle washing, gardening and cleaning of roads and premises.
No approvals will be granted for connections to new projects until further orders, and anyone caught wasting drinking water could face legal action.
