Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the BRICS Summit 2026 in India on Saturday, welcoming leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Modi talked up India's role in BRICS, saying the group stands for "people-centric and humanity-first" values: think resilience, innovation, teamwork, and sustainability.
Modi urges U.N. Security Council reform
Modi pushed for changes to the U.N. Security Council so more voices are heard, especially from the Global South.
He called this a "coming-of-age moment" for BRICS and wants the Global South to help shape world decisions.
To keep things moving forward, he suggested a digital repository to track what BRICS decides and make sure those plans actually happen.
As Modi put it: Global South must become a rule-shaper.
