New Aadhaar authentication rules for Tatkal tickets 2025

India

From July 1, 2025, you'll need to use Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal train tickets on IRCTC. The move aims to ensure only real passengers get these last-minute tickets. Starting July 15, 2025, you'll also have to verify your booking with an Aadhaar-based OTP.

How Tatkal tickets are booked

Tatkal tickets can only be booked through the IRCTC site or app using your linked Aadhaar. Bookings open one day before travel—10am for AC classes and 11am for non-AC. For the first half hour, from 10:00am to 10:30am for AC classes and from 11:00am to 11:30am for non-AC classes, agents can't book, so regular users get priority.

Things to remember

To book Tatkal, link your Aadhaar with your IRCTC account. Extra charges apply: 10% of fare for second class and 30% for other classes (within set limits). No discounts or name changes are allowed under this scheme, so double-check details before booking.
