Odisha college lecturer arrested after student protests
India
A guest lecturer at a government college in Bhubaneswar was arrested for allegedly asking a minor student for sexual favors in exchange for higher grades.
Students quickly protested, leading to his immediate removal from the job. He'd only been teaching there since June.
What's happening now?
The Odisha Culture Department has set up a three-member committee to investigate and is encouraging students to speak up without fear.
Police have charged the lecturer under the POCSO Act and other laws after the principal filed a complaint.
This case also brings back memories of a similar incident earlier in July in Balasore after a student set herself on fire following alleged harassment.
