Odisha widow allegedly dies after missing 3 months' ₹1,000 pension
A 66-year-old widow from Chadheyapada village, Odisha, allegedly died after consuming pesticide after not receiving her ₹1,000 monthly pension for three months.
Her family says she depended on this money and five kilograms of rice from a food scheme to get by.
B Chandi Dora, one of her daughters, said her mother might have died by consuming pesticides as she did not get the pension for the last three months, explaining that her mother had been repeatedly visiting the bank to check whether the pension amount had been credited.
Portal glitches delay 149,000 Ganjam pensions
Officials confirmed Dora last got her pension in March.
She's not alone, over 149,000 people in Ganjam district haven't received their pensions due to technical issues with the payment portal.
Odisha's Minister for School and Mass Education, ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare admitted to software glitches and promised fixes soon, but families say these delays are causing real hardship for vulnerable folks who rely on these payments just to manage daily life.
