Odisha's new scheme offers ₹51,000 to support women's marriages

India

Odisha has rolled out the Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana (MKBY), giving financial help to women from low-income families for their weddings.
The goal is to ease marriage costs and encourage fair, legal practices—following the earlier Subhadra scheme that reached over one crore women.

What MKBY gives and why it matters

Women aged 18+ can get ₹35,000 directly in their account, plus ₹10,000 in wedding gifts like a bridal saree and essentials. NGOs will also provide ₹6,000 for wedding logistics.
The scheme aims to boost marriage registration, spread awareness about legal rights and dowry laws, and has set aside ₹60 crore for the next five years.
It's also seen as a move by BJP to connect with women voters who have traditionally supported rival parties, particularly the BJD.
