Hospital visit
Couple's desperate search for medical assistance
With no ambulance in sight, Venkataraman's wife decided to take him to a nearby private hospital in Kathriguppe on their two-wheeler. However, they were first turned away by a private hospital as no doctor was available. At another facility, an ECG confirmed that Venkataraman had suffered a heart attack but staff did not begin emergency treatment or arrange an ambulance.
Fatal accident
Tragic end to emergency response
While on their way to the hospital, Venkataraman and his wife met with an accident. CCTV footage from the scene shows Venkataramanan's wife anxiously begging passing motorists for help, her hands folded, while her husband lies unconscious on the road. Several automobiles are seen driving by without stopping to help. A cab driver eventually came forward and rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Health statistics
India's cardiovascular health crisis highlighted
Despite the tragedy, the family chose kindness by choosing to donate Venkataramanan's eyes. This incident also highlights a larger issue of cardiovascular health in India. According to the Cause of Death Report from the Sample Registration System (SRS) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, heart disease is now India's leading cause of death. Between 2021 and 2023, heart-related deaths increased to approximately 31% of all deaths nationwide, up from roughly 22% in the previous period.
