R.M. Alagappa Chettiar offered Jupiter Airways to rescue 1947 refugees
Dr. R.M. Alagappa Chettiar was a visionary industrialist from Tamil Nadu who stepped up during India's early days after Partition.
In 1947, he offered his own airline, Jupiter Airways, to help rescue refugees and support the Indian Army.
He also donated land and funds to start the Central Electrochemical Research Institute in Karaikudi, showing his commitment to science and progress.
Chettiar founded universities, received Padma Bhushan
Chettiar used his success to launch institutions like Alagappa University and AC College of Technology, making quality education more accessible.
His free student meal programs inspired Tamil Nadu's midday meal scheme.
Honored with a Padma Bhushan in 1957 (and once knighted before independence), Chettiar's legacy lives on: he proved that business leaders can be true nation builders.
