Russia remains India's top crude supplier for 3 years
India is sticking to its decision to buy Russian oil, making it clear it does not need anyone's approval, even as Russia-to-India crude shipments were just over 1.0 million barrels a day in February 2026.
Russia still holds the top spot as India's biggest crude supplier for three years.
Energy security is a big deal for India
India relies on imports for over 85% of its oil, so energy security is a big deal.
Even with the US urging India to back off Russian supplies, Indian refiners are only trimming orders by about 20% to 25%, amid policy pressure, sanctions, refinery maintenance and logistical disruptions.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is stepping up and nearly matching Russia's export levels to India for the first time in years, especially as tensions rise in the Middle East and threaten key shipping routes.
