S Jaishankar urges India Bangladesh ties built on mutual interest
India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar says the future of India-Bangladesh ties should be all about "mutual interest," basically, both sides looking out for each other.
He brought this up at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum, especially as there's a bit of uncertainty around Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's possible visit to India.
Right now, both countries are quietly working things out behind the scenes.
Bangladesh reiterates Sheikh Hasina extradition demand
Things got tense after a virtual event in New Delhi by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back in August.
Bangladesh claims it hurt their relationship and has repeated its call for Sheikh Hasina's extradition, something India hasn't really addressed yet.
While Jaishankar didn't get into those details, he emphasized that stable friendships need shared interests at their core.
Tarique Rahman invited to BRICS outreach
Rahman has been invited to visit India and attend the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi, an important step since ties have been rocky amid political tensions over the past two years.
Both sides are still figuring out the details, but this trip could be a big deal for getting things back on track.
