SC nudges Election Commission to rethink SIR deadlines

India

The Supreme Court has asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to reconsider and possibly extend the deadlines for submitting Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 voter forms, especially in states like Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.
The court said the ECI should "take a sympathetic view" given local challenges, after hearing concerns that many eligible voters could be left out.

Why this matters for you

These deadline changes are a big deal because they directly impact who gets to vote in the 2027 assembly elections.
Lawyers pointed out that up to 25 lakh people in Kerala alone might be excluded from the draft list.
By pushing back these dates—Kerala's now December 18, UP's December 26—more eligible voters may have the opportunity to get on the rolls before final lists are locked in early 2026.
The Supreme Court is also set to review the constitutionality of the SIR process next month, so stay tuned if you care about your vote counting!
