SC says: Divorced Muslim women can claim all wedding gifts
The Supreme Court just made it clear—if a Muslim woman gets divorced, she has the right to all her wedding gifts, even those given to her husband.
This comes after Rousanara Begum fought for years to get back her gifts, and the top court finally sided with her under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act.
What did the court actually say?
The judges pointed out that Section 3(1) of the Act covers any property or gift given before or at marriage—by anyone.
They tossed out confusing evidence from another case and trusted official records showing Begum's gifts were worth ₹7 lakh plus about 350gm of gold.
Why does this matter?
This isn't just about one person—it's a big step for women's rights, especially in places where old-school attitudes still rule.
The decision means divorced Muslim women can stand their ground and claim what's rightfully theirs, without losing out because of technicalities or outdated customs.
