Supreme Court orders Punjab Haryana supply 598MU Oct-March to Himachal
India
After nearly 60 years of back-and-forth, the Supreme Court has settled how electricity from the Bhakra-Nangal and Beas projects gets shared between Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
Now, Punjab and Haryana must supply 598 million units of power each year, during Oct-March, to Himachal Pradesh for the next 20 years, finally putting a 2011 court order into action.
Himachal Pradesh share cut to 11,973MU
The court also made it clear that Himachal Pradesh's share will be 11,973 million units instead of the earlier 13,000 million, since its project costs are being adjusted against what it is owed.
Chief Justice Surya Kant called this compliance long overdue, and with this decision, a long legal tug-of-war over electricity is officially over.
