Supreme Court sets homemakers' unpaid work compensation at ₹30,000 monthly
The Supreme Court just ruled that unpaid household work should be valued at ₹30,000 a month, up from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000.
This means if a homemaker is killed or injured in a motor accident, their contribution will now count for more when courts decide compensation.
It's a big move toward recognizing the real value of work done at home.
Insurers brace for higher 3rd-party payouts
Insurers are bracing for higher payouts since an industry executive estimated that women account for 10-12% of motor accident death claims, with a majority of those cases involving homemakers.
Experts expect third-party claim reserves to rise by 5% to 8%.
With third-party motor insurance premiums already up 9.3% in FY26 and stricter rules in play, companies will need to rethink how much money they set aside for these long-term claims.
