Surplus monsoon rainfall elevates reservoir levels in India
India's monsoon has delivered 9% more rain than usual, quickly raising water levels in 161 major reservoirs.
Storage jumped nearly 5% in just a week after a long dry spell, and overall capacity now stands at 36.42%.
The early monsoon arrival on May 23 helped kick things off.
Better irrigation for farmers
Fuller reservoirs mean better irrigation for farmers—kharif crop planting is up 10% compared to last year, covering over 137 lakh hectares.
While the lone reservoir in Goa is full, as well as two others—Sapua in Odisha and Shetrunji in Gujarat (great news for crops), states like Bihar are still waiting on rain.
The IMD says more showers are likely soon.
Extra water could help boost food production
National reservoir levels are now over 75% higher than last year and well above the 10-year average.
This extra water could really help boost food production and keep things steady for the months ahead.
