Tamil Nadu eyes international liquor brands to recoup lost revenue
Tamil Nadu is thinking about letting international liquor brands into the state, hoping to boost revenue and give people more choices.
After shutting down 717 TASMAC liquor shops (nearly 15% cut), the state lost a chunk of its income and saw buyers heading to Bengaluru and Puducherry for better options.
By bringing in global labels, the government wants to keep customers at home and recover lost revenue.
Tamil Nadu TASMAC revamp, stricter checks
The state also plans to modernize TASMAC outlets: think better ambiance and a smoother buying experience.
Alongside this, officials are cracking down on underage sales (no booze for anyone under 21) and making sure clubs stick to rules like serving members and their eligible guests during prescribed working hours.
The government says stricter checks will help stop revenue leaks and improve how alcohol is sold across Tamil Nadu.
